The majority of us go to Search Engines when we need to find something or someone on the internet. The majority of us additionally have a very short attention span whenever we’re online. Thermal Shock Chambers are a type of testing machine that provide a very fast temperature shock to a product being tested to ensure that it will be reliable. Items generally tested for this will include electronic assemblies and aerospace parts. Numerous consumer electronics today are also tested to make sure they will not fail when used by a consumer.

The heart of the Thermal Shock Chamber are the test zones. Normally these will be one cold zone and one hot zone. A basket which contains the test specimen is moved from one zone to the other exposing tested product to to an extremely fast change in temperature. The system used to transport the test basket is mostly and electric or pneumatic in nature.

Thermal Shock Chambers are designed with two or three zones. If the chamber has a third zone, then this zone could be the ambient zone (same temperature as ambient since it is exposed to the ambient conditions around the chamber). Sometimes Thermal Shock Chambers are also designed to be of a double capacity type. If a double capacity style, then there will be two test baskets. As one of the baskets move into the hot chamber, the other basket is transported into the cold chamber. This doubles up the capacity of the thermal shock chamber and therefore referred to as being a double capacity type.

Mechancial refrigeration compressors are typically used to facilitate cooling for Thermal Shock Chambers. However, CO2 or LN2 can also be used, but this can become costly over a long period of time. Both gas cooled and mechanically refrigerated thermal shock chambers usually have a temperature range of -70C to +170C. The hot zone is heated using electrical heating elements.

The compressors utilized for Thermal Shock Chambers need to be large enough to ensure that the product being tested recovers in a specified time once it is moved from the hot zone to the cold zone. The heating elements for the hot zone also need to be large enough to ensure that the product temperature recovers in a specified time when it is moved from the cold zone to the hot zone. For example, a small thermal shock chamber including a test basket about 10×10x10 could have two 6HP refrigeration compressors in a cascade configuration to accomplish this. Obviously there will be a maximum size limit of the test load which can be tested utilizing these size compressors.

Since most Thermal Shock Chambers use 5HP Compressors or above, they will need to be remote air cooled or water cooled. If the compressors are not large enough to ensure adequate cooling, then LN2 or CO2 boost can be added - Keep in mind though that the cost of using LN2 or CO2 can accumulate over time and become expensive.
